How to install, play and edit AOE2 custom scenarios

When you create your own scenarios in AOE2, they are saved on your local hard drive

Sharing them is a matter of copying the scenario file to somebody else’s computer with AOE2 installed.

Installing a scenario file

Scenario files are stored in the following directory:

<username>\Games\Age of Empires 2 <location>\<some number>\resources\_common\scenario

When you get a scenario file from a friend (or one of my scenario files here for that matter), just copy them to that folder.

Playing a custom scenario

Open AOE2 and click on “Standard Game”.

In the following dialog, select “Custom Scenario” on the right as the Game Type.

The following dialog shows the scenario files in the folder mentioned above.

Select the one you want to play and click “Load Scenario”.

And off you go…

Editing a custom scenario

You can of course use the AOE2 scenario editor to adjust the custom scenario to your own requirements.

I will not go into details here about how the scenario editor works. It is somewhat complicated but I leave it to you to figure it out.

Go back to the Main Menu.

Click on “Editors”

Select the scenario you want to edit and click “Load Scenario”.

The editor will load with the scenario you selected.
