Building a Home Recording Studio

After years of recording with basic setups, I decided to invest in a proper home recording studio. Building one requires more than just buying equipment — there are four key requirements that have to be in place first.

  • Partner support — Dedicating a room and spending a significant budget requires full understanding and support from your partner.
  • A dedicated room — You need a room that can be permanently set up as a studio. A shared or multi-purpose room creates constant compromises.
  • Budget — A realistic budget for a proper home studio starts at around €4,000–5,000. There are no shortcuts that don't cost you quality.
  • Time — Planning, ordering, building, and learning the new equipment takes weeks or months. Only start if you can commit the time.

In my case, all four conditions were finally met in the spring of 2018. The guest room would become my studio. Planning began on May 1st and the studio was fully operational by June 22nd, 2018.
